In the Beaumont family people have special abilities called savvy. A savvy first appears on the child’s thirteenth birthday. Mississippi Beaumont’s (called Mibs) birthday is just days away. She is excited and fantasizing what her savvy is going to be. Mibs has three brothers and a sister, two of whom already have a savvy. Although, two days before Mibs’ birthday, her father is in a car accident and is put in Salina Hope Hospital. Life seems duller and less exciting for Mibs. On the morning before her birthday, Mibs’ mother and older brother, Rocket, go to the hospital. Mrs. Rosemary comes over to look after the children and plans to have Mibs birthday at the church. This is an unfortunate for the Beaumont family, because on a Beaumont’s thirteenth birthday, there savvy awakens and sometime wreak havoc. Will Mibs be able to control her savvy? Will her father be okay? I would give this book and ‘A’ rating due to its suspense and humor, and I recommend it to all age groups. Savvy is also a Newberry Honor Winner. This a review of the book BOMB! by Steve Sheinkin. This book is about the race to build the nuclear bomb during World War Two. It tells a story about Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist in charge of the project. The book covers how scientists on the bomb project turned into soviet spies. The book also tells you about American soviet spies. This book covers how the project began and how they picked Robert Oppenheimer for the leader. It tells about how nuclear fusion, what lets nuclear bombs work, was discovered. The story of Manhattan Project, which spurred the American bomb project into motion, is told as well. One big part of the project is where it took place. It tells the story of how they found the site,What it used to be, how they added to it, and how they found the secretary for the front desk. The project took place in Los Alamos. The last part of the story is the making of the bomb and the testing of the bomb. It also tells about the pilot and crew that dropped the first bomb. They tell how they named the bombs. It tells stories from people who had the bomb dropped on them.I would give this book a 9/10. It was non-fiction, but managed to keep me interested. It also left me in a state of suspense because every chapter switched point-of-views. I just wish that they went into more backstory on the Soviet spies and why the turned on their country. |
