Boyer The Kane Summit Hospital This month’s Throwback Thursday is a picture of the Kane Summit Hospital. Until it’s closing in 1927 the Summit Hospital was said to be the “Hospital of Miracles in the Allegheny” because of the great medical performances that took place there. The most famous procedure was Dr. Evan O’Neill Kane’s self-surgery in 1921 on Dr. Kane’s own appendix without using anesthesia. Elizabeth D. Kane (wife of the general) was the one who founded the first hospital, but then had it torn down for the building of the Summit Hospital. Elizabeth then became Head Doctor of the Summit Hospital until her death in 1909. Other well known doctors who worked there included: Dr. Harriet A. Kane, Dr. Thomas L. Kane junior, Doctor Evan O’Neill Kane, and Dr. Edward H. McCleery. Over 50 million medical procedures took place and over 50,000 deaths in the Summit Hospital. The Summit Hospital was closed and torn down in 1927 to make room for the Thompson Hotel. Since the closing of the Summit Hospital the UMPC Kane Hospital has been taking care of the people of Kane and the surrounding areas. By: Jake C.C
