By Matt J. Boyer This Throwback Thursday consists of a picture of Camp 10 of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) located in the Allegheny National Forest. The CCC was designed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1933 to provide jobs for young men during the Great Depression. At the end of the month when each member of the CCC would get paid, they would only get a quarter of their pay. The rest of the members would be sent home to their families. 16 camps were built in the Allegheny National Forest altogether. If you ever wondered about where most of the trees in the forest came from, they were most likely to have been planted by a CCC boy. Over 30,000 trees were planted during the nine years the camps were operational. In the year 1942, President Roosevelt decided to shut down the CCC camps and make them into German Prisoner of War (POW) camps until 1945 when World War II ended. During the war, the German prisoners did much of the same work that the CCC did. For Example the POWs built Twin Lakes, but did not have time to build the second lake before the end of the war. Though today not much remains of the camps some items from the camp are still there. More information about the CCC camps can be found at the Kane Historic Preservation Society. Comments are closed.
