The students have worked approximately 12 hours on the design and production of their CO2 Cars. This assignment comes after a study of aerodynamics where they learn the effects of lift, thrust, gravity, and drag on objects as they move through a fluid (air). Bernoulli’s Law (produces lift) is also discussed as to its contribution to the performance of their car on Race Day. The CO2 Car Competition is a year-long endeavor in which every student in the 8th grade participates. All students in the 8th grade Industrial Technology class complete the Aerodynamics Unit which concludes with the design and production of their personal CO2 car. They participate in a race conducted in the hallway outside of the classroom. The cars are raced down a 60’ track and they are timed to cover this distance. This time is then converted into a speed in miles per hour. At the conclusion of the 4th grading period’s Industrial Technology class, all students will have raced, and a Yearly Champion is declared. This winner’s name is posted on a plaque in the Industrial Technology class. This will be the 12th year of the competition. Its inaugural year was in 2005 and over 1100 students have participated.
