The cave at Okinawa
It's April, 1945, the month that America took over Okinawa. I was at school when it happened, the Japanese army knew that the Americans were coming so they got us prepared. My class was given grenades and other weapons. We where in all in shock... Then all of a sudden, a tree near us was hit with a shell from an American destroyer. When it hit we all flinched but we didn't run. We were given 2 grenades 1 to kill an american, and 1 to kill yourself. When one of my classmates asked why, the commander said so the Americans can't capture you. Then he left and we went over to a hill, over the hill we had a clear view of the American battleships. There were hundreds of them, then we all heard buzzing above us and we looked up. There were dozens of kamikazes heading right towards the American ships. Then they dived down and at least 3 of them got through and they all tried to hit a huge battleship. One missed, and the other one blew up on the ships hull. We all stood on the hill not knowing what to do. Finally we left the hill and went inland where we found a huge cave that had food and water in it so we stayed in there because, a storm was starting. We stayed in the cave for a couple hours without eating any of the food. We all knew we needed to conserve all of it. That was when we heard an engine and footsteps, then a noise rang through the cave, we all knew what it was, when we all looked toward the entrance of the cave it was too late, a grenade was rolling toward them. It blew up and threw them all to the ground, we all scrambled for our grenades and when we saw shadows we lit the fuses on our grenades and threw them. The blast was so big the cave collapsed and we were trapped and there was no way out.We all started to panic when my friend Tasheek came up with an idea to get us out. He knew that not all of us had used a grenade and we all still had at least one left, so he told us the plan. He said that with all the grenades we should be able to blow the collapsed part of the cave. At first we all liked the idea but then we started have doubts because, it might kill them so they held off. A little while later we all got hungry so we ate a little bit of the food and drank some of the water. We all fell asleep and we all woke up a little while later to an explosion. When I got up I saw that one of my classmates blew himself up with his last grenade. When all of the other students came back they saw the horror of what the kid did to himself. Tasheek was the last one to come and he reeled back when he saw the dead kid. We all realized it was Shantago, one of the popular kids in his grade. We all knew the reason he killed himself, it was because he thought he was gonna die in the cave. That was when we knew what to do, we had to do Tasheeks' idea. We gathered up most of the grenades, but not all of them because we needed some to defend ourselves. We put them in a pile and backed away, I lit the fuse on my grenade and threw it at the pile. We all ran to the other side of the cave and then the ground shook. We heard rocks crash to the ground and when it was over we went to the entrance of the cave. On our way there we were blinded by light and we all broke out into tears, we were free from the cave. Outside there was a dead Japanese soldier, we took some rope that he had and made some of the water cans and food cans backpacks. Then we were off to a headquarters that the commander had told us about that was to the north of Okinawa. Comments are closed.
