Pt 2 april,1945
As we made our way to the main Japanese headquarters we met with some Okinawaians that were seeking refuge. We told them that we were going north and that was all we said and left. Then that was when Tasheek saw a platoon of Americans that were digging fox holes into the ground. We knew that we could not get past them because we were in a narrow, huge ditch. So we thought of a battle plan to attack them but in the middle of planning we heard someone yell but none of us understood what they were saying. One of the men got up and grabbed something and held it towards us and then before we could do anything we heard something ignite. Then flames sprung out of the gun and caught everything in its path on fire including us. The one good thing was that it was raining out so it started to put us out but it was slow and the fire came out of the gun fast. In a panic we ran away but some of my class ran away from the main group and when we were not on fire we stopped running. We all looked around to see who we lost and it looked like we lost at least 9 people. We knew we had to find them so we went out and tried to find all of the nine people. The first person we found was laying on the group hugging his legs to his chest but he was never on fire because he probably was at the back of the group. We took him with us on our search to find more of our class. The next people we found we found were in a nearby spring cooling off after the attack. That meant we had to find 1 more person so we all spread out to cover more land. At least 10 minutes into the search one of the kids found him by a tiny pond that was in the middle of nowhere. When I got there I saw him torched and scared to death by a tree a lot worse than the first kid. We took him and all of the others to the spring to cool off and calm down from the attack. After we all were cooled off we were on our way to the headquarters again. For the most part it was fine until we had a run in with a lone American. We did not want to fight so we ran and went around him. After that we were all happy that relief that we got around and we all thought that was gonna be it for the hard parts...it was not. On our way there we ran into a huge group of soldiers and they attacked us and this time I knew we would not find everyone if we tried to search. I ran as far as I could but it seemed as if I was going nowhere because wherever I ran there were gunshots and explosions. Finally I found a cave and went in, there was a japanese soldier who told me that we had to get to the south part of the island. As we were leaving the cave we heard something. We took one step then PAK, bits of mud and soil hit us and we turned back to run in the cave when the sound came again PAK,and the soldier I was with yelled in pain. We got into the cave then realized that I was nowhere near the hq, the cave was the one me and my class were in. I put the soldier on the ground and looked at him, his hip was a mess. The sniper hit him in the side when we were going back into the cave and he was bleeding. I knew that I had to stop the bleeding but with what? I did not have anything to help him with the wound, and I knew that the closest medic was probably down south. I stepped out of the cave and immediately I went back in, outside were hundreds of American soldiers. I knew what I had to do… there was no other way out of it… I had to surrender. I stepped outside with my hands up, 3 soldiers pointed at me then scrambled for weapons as one went off to tell someone about me. A medic and a really tall guy came to me, the soldier said something but I could not understand what they were saying. When they were done talking the medic came to me and collected me and started walking towards a tent, right then the japanese attacked. Me and the medic ran away and then KABOOM, the ground where I was once standing erupted into a huge crater. My ears rang and the sound of the Americans shot up into the ridge. All of a sudden at least 15 meters away the ground blew and with a KRABOOM!!!!!!! When I woke up I was in a tent and a man in white was standing next to me with a needle and glass of water. He told me that the needle had helped with the pain and helped me sleep. He told me that I was hit with a piece of metal from the bomb so he had to stitch up my arm. The soldiers let us go and all of the refugees went to look for their homes, or what was left of their homes. I went to the top of the ridge and looked at the island, the whole island was opened up because most of the trees were gone. I felt a bit of pride because of what I went through, what I survived, and what I saw. I knew that this was a chance to start a knew life, one by myself, and one that I would never forget.
