People think that Valentine's day is a day about giving chocolate and cards. This is likely because of commercialism and ads. But, it is really a celebration of the saint Valentinus. In Rome, soldiers were not allowed to be married. This was because the emperor thought they wouldn't fight if they had families. Valentinus helped them to marry in secret. Unfortunately, he was discovered and imprisoned. When he found out he would die he agreed to marry the daughter of the jailer to continue his legacy. It is rumored that he gave her a letter right before he died and that this is the origin of the valentine card. So now you know why we give each other chocolate and cards. Comments are closed.
